About the Role
You will join our Water team in Edinburgh, supporting the delivery of civil engineering design across the Scottish Water programme. You will work on water and wastewater infrastructure including treatment works, pumping stations, service reservoirs, pipelines and network schemes, from feasibility and optioneering through to detailed design and construction support. The role is based in our Glasgow office with hybrid working.
Your work will cover site layouts, earthworks, drainage, access roads and hardstandings, below-ground pipework and the civil elements of treatment and pumping assets. You will prepare calculations, drawings, reports and specifications, and support submissions for consents and approvals.
You will work closely with process, mechanical, electrical and structural colleagues, as well as clients, contractors and external stakeholders, to make sure designs are coordinated, buildable and aligned with project objectives.
As you develop, you will take on more responsibility for technical delivery, project coordination and client contact, with structured support towards chartership and the chance to support junior members of the team.
Key Responsibilities Include
- Develop civil design for treatment works, pumping stations, service reservoirs, pipelines and network schemes.
- Produce calculations, drawings, reports and specifications from feasibility through to detailed design.
- Design site layouts, earthworks, drainage, access roads and below-ground pipework that are practical, compliant and buildable.
- Support consents and approvals, and engage with local authorities, SEPA and other stakeholders.
- Coordinate your designs with process, mechanical, electrical and structural colleagues.
- Support site investigations, design reviews and construction activities.
- Help deliver infrastructure that improves water quality, protects the environment and provides reliable services for communities across Scotland.
- Build your technical capability through mentoring and hands-on project experience.
About You
Essential
- Degree qualified (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- Working towards Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status with ICE or a similar institution.
- Experience delivering civil engineering design within the water sector or another infrastructure, utilities or regulated environment.
- Understanding of drainage design, earthworks and below-ground pipework.
- Proficient in AutoCAD, with exposure to Civil 3D, InfoDrainage or similar tools.
- Able to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- A confident communicator with good report-writing skills.
Desirable
- Experience within the UK water sector, including familiarity with Scottish Water or other water company design standards.
- Experience with treatment works, pumping stations or pipeline design.
- Understanding of CDM Regulations and designing for safety.
- Experience or interest in hydraulic design, sustainable drainage and pipeline routing.
- Experience from adjacent sectors such as energy, rail, nuclear or transport infrastructure.
