About The Team:

We work across a variety of clients from National contractors and developers through to UK Statutory Bodies enabling us to work on diverse and challenging projects. This enables us to deploy best practice and bring the latest ideas to our delivery.

Role Overview & Key Responsibilities:

As a Senior Highways Engineer, you will take a leading technical role in the design and delivery of highways and transportation schemes, supporting Project Managers and Principals in ensuring high-quality, compliant, and efficient project outcomes. You will be responsible for managing packages of work, providing technical guidance to junior engineers, and contributing to successful project delivery.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and delivery of highways and transportation schemes across all stages, from feasibility and preliminary design through to detailed design and construction support.
  • Produce and review highways designs in accordance with relevant standards and guidance, including DMRB, Manual for Streets, and local authority requirements.
  • Manage and coordinate design inputs across highways elements, ensuring designs are technically robust, safe, and buildable.
  • Prepare and review technical reports, drawings, specifications, and calculations to a high professional standard.
  • Provide technical input to multidisciplinary project teams, working closely with drainage, structures, utilities, and environmental colleagues.
  • Support Project Managers with programme planning, resourcing, and risk identification and mitigation.
  • Assist with responding to technical queries during design development and construction phases.

Additional Senior-Level Duties:

  • Provide day-to-day technical guidance and informal mentoring to graduate and intermediate engineers.
  • Undertake technical reviews of junior engineers’ work, providing constructive feedback and ensuring compliance with standards.
  • Contribute to value engineering and optioneering exercises to improve safety, sustainability, and cost efficiency.
  • Support the preparation of fee proposals, scopes of work, and technical inputs for bids and tenders.
  • Liaise with clients, local authorities, and statutory undertakers, attending meetings and representing the highways discipline as required.
  • Assist in the identification and management of design risks, including contribution to risk registers and design reviews.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of highways design processes, templates, and technical guidance within the team.

Professional Development & Behaviours:

  • Work towards or hold professional accreditation (e.g. IEng or CEng with ICE or CIHT).
  • Skills with Civils 3D, Infodrainage and utility coordination are advantageous.
  • Demonstrate strong technical judgement, attention to detail, and a collaborative approach to problem-solving.
  • Take ownership of allocated work packages, delivering to agreed quality, cost, and programme targets.
  • Promote a positive health, safety, and wellbeing culture within the project team.

 Qualifications:

  • Degree qualified in civil engineering or similar
