The Opportunity

Flood risk is one of the defining infrastructure challenges of our time. As climate change intensifies and the pressure on the UK's water environment grows, the need for skilled, experienced hydraulic modellers who can translate complex data into resilient, real-world solutions has never been more urgent.

At Stantec, our Hydrology and Flood Risk team is at the forefront of that work. From nationally significant Strategic Resource Option assessments to river restoration and local flood authority studies, we are delivering projects that protect communities, secure water supplies and improve the natural environment. We are looking for a Senior Hydrologist and Flood Hydraulic Modeller who is ready to take a leading role in that work.

About The Role

You will join a friendly, collaborative group of over 100 Hydrologists, Hydrogeologists, Water Resources Planners and Water Quality Scientists, with flexibility to be based from our Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, or Warrington offices.

Your work will span a wide range of hydraulic modelling projects across the water sector, including 1D-2D flood risk modelling, public water supply resilience studies and support for Local Flood Authorities. Typical projects include modelling new infrastructure in floodplains, eel screen installation assessments, reservoir decommissioning studies and river restoration, predominantly using Flood Modeller-TUFLOW packages. Some of this work contributes to nationally significant long-term water supply resilience programmes.

As a senior team member, your responsibilities will extend beyond technical delivery. You will mentor junior colleagues, lead quality assurance and technical review, develop modelling methodologies, prepare fee proposals and help shape the future direction of our flood risk and water environment services. You will build and maintain trusted relationships with clients and regulators, and contribute actively to business development as the team continues to grow.

Your core technical experience will include 1D/2D hydraulic modelling using Flood Modeller, TUFLOW or InfoWorks ICM; hydrological methods such as FEH, ReFH2 and WINFAP; preparation of Flood Risk Assessments in line with national planning policy; GIS analysis using ArcGIS Pro or QGIS; and liaison with LLFAs, the Environment Agency, SEPA and water companies.

Beyond the essentials, experience in any of the following would be welcome: surface water drainage strategies and SuDS design; LLFA studies; natural flood management; river restoration; or contributions to Environmental Impact Assessments.

Your Impact

The projects you lead here will protect communities from flooding, contribute to the long-term security of the UK's water supply and support the restoration of rivers and natural systems under pressure. These are outcomes that matter, and your modelling and leadership will be central to making them happen.

Just as importantly, the people you mentor will carry the skills and standards you help instil long into their careers. That kind of influence is only available in a senior role, and our team takes it seriously.

About You

You hold a degree in Civil Engineering, Geography, Environmental Science or a related subject, and you are Chartered or working towards it with CIWEM, ICE or a similar body. You bring a strong track record in delivering and managing hydraulic modelling projects, and you combine technical depth with the leadership and communication skills that build trusted client relationships.

You are comfortable managing multiple complex projects simultaneously, supporting business development and helping steer the strategic direction of a growing team. You produce high-quality technical reports for a range of audiences and approach quality assurance with the rigour that complex, high-consequence work demands.

Most importantly, you are looking for more than a technical role. You want to lead, to develop others and to be part of a team that is genuinely shaping how flood risk and water environment work gets done across the UK.
