The Opportunity

As part of continued and ambitious growth, Stantec is seeking a Technical Director level HV Primary Plant Engineer to join our Energy & Resources business within the Transmission & Distribution team. This role can be based anywhere in the UK and offers an exciting opportunity to play a key role in delivering projects of varying scale while contributing to our wider growth ambitions.

About the Role

In this leadership role, you will be responsible for developing and leading the HV Primary Plant team on electrical substation design projects. You will oversee both FEED and detailed design for substation refurbishments, extensions, and new-build schemes.

Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, you will drive technical excellence across projects while ensuring high-quality delivery. The role also includes engaging with key Transmission & Distribution clients across the UK, requiring strong sector knowledge and experience.

Your Impact
 
In this role, you will play a pivotal part in shaping and growing the HV Primary Plant capability within the Transmission & Distribution team. You will lead the delivery of FEED and detailed design across a diverse portfolio of substation projects, ensuring high-quality, innovative solutions that meet client requirements and industry standards.

By working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will help deliver integrated engineering outcomes that add real value to our clients. Your leadership will strengthen existing client relationships and support the development of new opportunities, contributing directly to the continued success and growth of the business.

A key part of your impact will be in developing people—coaching and mentoring team members while fostering a collaborative, knowledge-sharing environment. You will champion technical excellence and continuous improvement, encouraging the adoption of best practices and innovative approaches that support the wider energy transition.

About You 
 
You are a proactive and collaborative engineering leader with a strong understanding of the electricity transmission and distribution industry. You are passionate about developing talent and sharing knowledge, and you stay engaged with the engineering community to drive innovation and best practice.
 
You will bring:
 
  • A degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Extensive experience in HV substation primary plant design and specification
  • A broad understanding of UK Transmission & Distribution clients and standards
  • Chartered Engineer status (IET) or working towards it
  • Experience as a Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE) under National Grid TP137, or an equivalent client defined role
  • TP141 HV Substation qualification (advantageous)
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop innovative, practical solutions and understand their wider project context
  • A collaborative mindset, valuing diverse contributions and sharing ideas to drive team success
